Guan Yin, whom I first knew as Kannon, is the bodhisattva of compassion. This particular sculpture of her is probably a fragment of a larger piece: the head alone is taller than I am. Here in the museum she looks down from a high pedestal, meeting visitors to the back gallery: Art before 1300: Asia, Egypt, Greece, Rome.
