mastodon

mday23L.jpg

You know, it must have been hard, being a mastodon - always having to explain at parties that you were not a mammoth. "No, see, they are a different family altogether. Really. We have blunt conical teeth - and our tusks? Our magnificent tusks are nearly horizontal."

(Acquired in 1898, this fossil skeleton of the American mastodon was one of the earliest specimens bought by Andrew Carnegie for the museum.)
