Sol LeWitt's laundry?

The Sol LeWitt mural along the main staircase is being restored: ink washes are being replaced with more stable acrylic paints, I gather. The sign says nothing about the purpose of the brightly colored cloths hanging from the scaffolding today. But today was Sunday, so no one was working on the restoration. Next week maybe I'll see the cloths in use - could they be for the application of paint? Or perhaps they serve a spiritual purpose, like Tibetan prayer flags?
